I also like the stories from "May We Borrow Your Husband?", including the title story, "Cheap in August," "Chagrin in Three Parts" and "Two Gentle People."

There were parts of "The Power and the Glory" that I really liked--and on the whole it has a lot of depth, but it's not the novel I reread most. Other than the two I mentioned, I guess I've reread "Travels With My Aunt" the most.
Heh, I read "The Power and the Glory" for the first time when I was twelve and hated it. I started crying at the scene where the protagonist fights the starving dog over a piece of rotting meat, and bawled my way through the rest of the book, swearing to never touch it again. Then, when I was 17 I had to review it for my English class and discovered that there was - as you say - so much depth in the story. But it's not exactly light reading, I feel - "Travels With My Aunt," on the other hand, is a fun read through and through. Love that to bits, too.

Haven't actually read "Dr. Fischer of Genova," to my shame.
Yeah--it seems like a tough one to assign to high school students, and even more distressing for a 12 year old--I don't think I would have been ready for it then, unless maybe I had been raised Catholic--but even then!

Maybe I will post about "Dr. Fischer" in a couple of days... I actually have a lot to write, but it doesn't look like this community gets too much action. I'll probably post anyway!
